Expedition Leader (Civilian)
Cole Weston
Male, Mid-30’s
Terran (Caucasian)
Role: Director of the Andromeda Expedition. He chooses what they’re looking for and where to look for it. He is charting the new galaxy as they explore it and is the ambassador to any first contacts the expedition makes. As ambassador, he must represent not just Earth, but the entire Galactic Federation. He has pulled every string and leveraged every favor he had coming to get the job of Director of the Andromeda Expedition. This is his dream mission.
History: Born on a sparsely populated, vast frontier world, Cole has always loved having wide open spaces to explore. He has always yearned to be at the forefront of humanity, at the edges of civilization. Though his parents would have preferred for him to stay with them, they could tell he was a wandering soul at heart and reluctantly encouraged him to enroll in Starfleet if he truly wanted to see the Galaxy.
In Starfleet Academy he excelled in his studies and was a natural leader. But he would often isolate himself and sometimes disappear without notice to go off on a personal journey. One of his instructors was Captain Oviedo San Lagos, who taking a teaching tour at the Academy. Oviedo saw great promise in Cole and encouraged him to stay focused, that great things lay ahead for someone like him. Oviedo told Cole he had a great destiny. Cole was inspired by Oviedo, seeing him as a surrogate father figure. He never skipped a class again and graduated at the top of their class (to the annoyance of his best friend in the Academy, Solon Vega, who graduated second in the class). When Cole graduated from the Academy, Oviedo personally requested him to be his helmsman aboard his new command, the U.S.S. Pegasus. Unfortunately, the Galactic War broke out soon after and he never got to see the Galaxy as an explorer, only a warrior. When the war ended, he resigned.
A former Starfleet officer, he always volunteered for duty on ships that were going into the farthest, most unknown regions of the Milky Way. He worked his way up the chain of command quickly through his dedication and his natural leadership abilities. But at the rank of Lt. Commander, he abruptly resigned his Starfleet commission to accept an offer to explore the galaxy on a research vessel. He has made more first contacts than any active duty captain in Starfleet.
Personality: Cole Weston is an experienced explorer with a sense of adventure. He is a dreamer and has a serious case of wanderlust, always wanting to go beyond the next star, looking ahead more than appreciating where he is.
He is generally a quiet, serious person with many acquaintances but only a few close friends. Only his close friends see him “come out of his shell” and be more relaxed and sociable.
He is a man of principles and integrity. He is also a bit of a pacifist, having had more than enough of war. He will not rush into conflict and believes it should be used as a last resort. He is a natural leader, but shies away from being responsible for the lives of others.
Relationships: Cole has a past relationship with Lexia that did not end well. He could not handle her very free and open Deltan sexuality as well as he thought he could, and became jealous and possessive of her. At heart, he is a romantic and a monogamist, and Lexia is not. They still love each other, but their lifestyles have kept them apart for many years. Cole sees Lexia as a kindred spirit, an explorer and a seeker of truth and knowledge.
Cole and Vega have been friends since the academy. Vega is like a brother to him. Vega is often Cole’s voice of “common sense”, grounding him when necessary. Vega is one of the few people that can convince Cole to put off acting on a vision he’s had. Cole has learned through experience to trust Vega’s instincts.
Cole sees Oviedo as a sort of father figure. While Cole’s own father was a scientist and inspired his love of science and exploration, Oviedo is the father who taught him to be a Starfleet officer, about duty and service.
