Welcome to Star Trek Uncharted!
What is "Star Trek Uncharted"?
A concept for a new Star Trek TV series, modernized for the 21st century with a new format, new technology, a new crew and a new mission. My goal is to get the pitch in front of Paramount/CBS/Bad Robot and, hopefully, have it go into production in time to air on the 50th anniversary of Star Trek in 2016.
I've been working on this concept for 20 years. In that time, I've revised and revisited and polished the concept, continually updating it as the years passed. All the while, I tried to keep the core values of Good Trek in mind:

- Interesting, diverse characters who interact and grow.
- A progressive, optimistic view of the future.
- The thrill of discovery, the adventure of the unknown.
- Space exploration.
- High concept sci-fi, but with a respect for and grounding in real science.
- Cutting-edge technology.
A Modern Trek
In updating Star Trek for the modern era, there were several approaches I wanted to take in my conceptualizing and writing of the series:
In updating Star Trek for the modern era, there were several approaches I wanted to take in my conceptualizing and writing of the series:
Diversity
I wanted to create a diverse new cast of characters that reflect our modern society (without being too literal or "preachy"). The diversity in the crew is especially formulated to allow for stories that I feel can comment on our modern world of ethnic, cultural and gender diversity, of always-on connectivity, of escapism, of stress and overworking and of inequality and prejudice.
Rebirth
Today we are very pessimistic about the future. The economy is depressed, jobs are still difficult to come by, there is still much prejudice and conflict in the world and we even seem to have given up on space, itself. It's been a very difficult 10-15 years where we've been turned inward as a people, instinctively, protectively. But I believe we need to be optimistic about the future, we need to return to lofty goals, great dreams and reach for the stars, both figuratively and literally. A great challenge is put to the crew of the Enterprise, a mystery as old as we are. The crew will rise to the occasion, face the unknown and venture into a whole new Galaxy in search of answers.

Modern Storytelling
I believe Star Trek would feel stale and "old-fashioned" as a traditionally scripted, Four Act, purely episodic series. The best shows on TV nowadays tell their stories in a more naturalistic format, with less expository dialogue and more reliance on acting and directing to convey subtext. Stories don't all wrap up nice & neatly, with everything back to normal by the end of an episode. One major approach that could help revive Star Trek is to present its stories in a more modern way. To that end, I've written the show in a "premium cable" format - along the lines of shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Walking Dead. There's a theme to each season of 13 high-quality episodes and stories are told in long arcs with overlapping subplots, mysteries and character arcs. You can judge for yourself if I was successful.

New Technology
Star Trek has many "old" new ideas built into it as part of its legacy - communicators, transporters, replicators, touch screens, warp drive, artificial gravity, etc. My goal is to keep those that still make sense and introduce or update others that seem likely given the direction of modern technology (for example: already our smartphones have far surpassed the PADDs and communicators in previous Star Treks, so I've jettisoned them for the most part and introduced new technology to replace them that still seems futuristic).

Take The Trek
I invite you to read the scripts I've written, starting with the 2-hour pilot episode/movie, and judge for yourself. Is this a Star Trek you would want to see return to TV? Please give it a read and let me know what you think. My goal is to get as much attention and publicity for this concept as possible through positive word of mouth and, hopefully, get the attention of someone at CBS (Les Moonves) or Paramount (Amy Powell) or Bad Robot (JJ Abrams, Bob Orci) involved in making the decisions for the future of Star Trek on TV.
