Captain
Solon Vega
Male, Age Unknown
Xian/Terran (Asian)
Role: Captain of the USS Enterprise, Captain Vega is responsible for the ship, its crew and the safety of the civilian scientists. In dangerous or hostile situations, he is in charge and may overrule Cole’s directives to ensure the safety and security of the ship and its mission.
History: Sol was raised on Elysia IV in a culture that believed in tempered discipline. They do not believe in speaking unless they have something useful and novel to offer. Solon rejected his repressive, closed culture and has an open, friendly demeanor.
His path to Starfleet was a rocky one. A dangerous escapade when he was young nearly killed him. In Starfleet Academy he excelled in personal combat and command classes, but would often show off and perform risky stunts. One of his slips in discipline cost his classmates a grade, however, and he received a strong rebuke and a lecture about loyalty and duty from an Academy instructor named Oviedo San Lagos. Oviedo was a Captain that Vega had admired for his long, sterling service and became Vega’s mentor. Vega never endangered a classmate again and ensured that not only he, but his entire crew graduated at the top of the Academy. When Vega graduated from the Academy, Oviedo personally requested him to be a security officer aboard his new command, the U.S.S. Pegasus, where he became Security Chief and, eventually, First Officer.
Once Oviedo was promoted to Admiral, he helped get Vega his first command – albeit a small ship: the USS Horizon. He was excited to get his own command and was well-liked by his crew, but he became bored with his assignments. He developed a reputation for being a bit of a “malcontent”, demanding more interesting assignments and questioning orders. On more than a few occasions, he disregarded orders and “went on his instincts”.
Personality: Unknown to most, Xians have a slight sense of their own personal future and appear to “know” when they are about to die, sensing the end of their own existence when they can no longer see into immediate future possibilities. This ability gives them great intuition and allows them to avoid danger.
Half Human, Vega has some Xian traits (such as long life and mild precognition) and was raised as a Xian. He is not privy to all of the esoteric knowledge of the Xians, having never studied to become a Gnostic, but he was raised in the tradition of ancient wisdom. Attending Starfleet academy like his mother has made him more open, tolerant and friendly than most Xians.
Vega is very personable and well-liked by the crew, but he takes his role as Captain very seriously. He is more pragmatic than his friend Cole, believing that sometimes violence is called for, but he respects Cole and will follow his lead if he thinks he’s right.
Vega has a very tactical mind. An avid tridimensional chess player, likes to play by instinct rather than by logic. He prefers to play the player than the game or the probabilities. He plays Daystrom a lot and their styles are very different.
Vega has a tendency to buck authority and make his own decisions, preferring to go on “instinct” rather than follow strict procedures. He understands the rules and has respect for them; he just believes sometimes they need to be broken to do the right thing. This has caused him some trouble with Starfleet Command and earned him a reputation as a troublemaker and renegade Captain.
Relationships: Vega is Cole's oldest friend and confidante. Vega was in Cole's crew at the Academy and always figured he’d be serving on a ship with Cole as Captain some day, not the other way around. He is the only one who could beat Cole hand-to-hand. Vega knows of a great loss Cole felt when he served with him on another ship - an experience that changed and matured him. But Sol won't tell anyone about it (Lexia would love to know).
Vega has often personally risked his life to save others and has been awarded medals for valor and bravery. He has a tendency to push his crew too far at times, but his charisma and competence inspires people to follow him into danger and adventure.
Vega has the quality of a good captain in that he can listen to the various and differing viewpoints of his crew, weigh them appropriately and then forge his own solution, instinctively finding the best path forward.
Vega was raised in a very sheltered society that believed in only marrying once you have found your lifemate. In practice, he has found this extremely difficult to stick to – there is simply too much temptation available. He often gives into temptation and engages in short-term, casual relationships, but always feels guilty about them.
